Upper Dolpo Trek Details

Trekking in Upper Dolpo region takes you to one of the most isolated valleys of Far-western region of Nepal. Situated in the north of the Dhaulagiri Range on the borders of Tibet, it is a protected area in Nepal as the Shey-Phoksundo National Park lies within its borders. This trek offers some fantastic views of many Himalayan peaks and a huge amount of flora and fauna to be enjoyed. Not to mention, the view of Kanjiroba peak, Phoksundo Lake and the Dhaulagiri massif three are the major stand out on this Upper Dolpo trek. Expeditions to Dolpo region are quite challenging, but the rewards are totally worth it- the rare vegetations, unspoiled trek routes, and the Himalayan views.

Upper Dolpo trek is known for its off-the-beaten-trail, the unspoiled routes, and the unique vegetation that remains unexplored. The major inhabitants here are the Buddhist people. For this reason, you will get to explore many ancient monuments, gompas, and temples. Rich in cultural and also natural diversity, the trek rewards with some stunning views of the snow peaks. As well as you will get to explore some very interesting animals, as it is a place where both Himalayan blue sheep and the elusive snow leopard make their respective homes. Also, they have also contained a huge variety of wildflowers along with an extensive range of birds.

The trekking journey starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and finally reaching Jhupal. Jhupal is the beginning point of our trek. Further, we head towards north through magnificent remote countryside the, farm villages and valleys with fabulous scenery of snow-capped peaks of Dolpo and Tibetan mountain ranges. Then, we reach our adventure destination at Shey Gompa via Lake Phokshumdo or Ringmo pristine, turquoise lake within its Nepal largest Dolpo National Park.

The Dolpo region was also chosen as the prime location for the 1999 Oscar Nominated film Himalaya. It is one of the remotest and least exposed areas of northern Nepal. The trek rewards you with rare opportunities to explore many unseen parts of the region. Also known as  “The Forbidden Kingdom” in its own term, it is a perfect destination for adventure enthusiast.

Upper Dolpo Detailed Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel

You will heartily be welcomed by our representative at the Tribhuwan International Airport. From thereon, you will be dropped at the hotel for relaxing. After that, you will be given a brief orientation of the Upper Mustang Trek by our representative.

Day 2Sightseeing at Kathmandu

After having our early morning breakfast, you will have a full day sightseeing plan at Kathmandu. Also popular as ‘the city of Temples’, you can visit the world heritage sites such as Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa, Pashupatinath temple, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square. Explore the beauty of the city, its culture, and tradition on this day. Furthermore, you will be prepared for trekking overnight. Overnight at the hotel.

Day 3Flight to Nepalgunj

After having our breakfast, we take a domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. Throughout the flight, we enjoy the spectacular views from up above. Located in the western region of Nepal, Nepalgunj is an important business area for many regions. Moreover, we can even stroll in the busy city of Nepalgunj.

Day 4Morning flight from Nepalgunj to Jhupal, Camp in Dunai

Today we leave behind Nepalgunj and head towards Jhupal. After having our breakfast, we take an early morning flight to Jhupal. The flight would be approximately 35 minutes long. Moreover, Jhupal is the starting point of our trek. Descending through local villages and terraced fields we head to the Bheri River. Finally, we reach Jhupal. Overnight at Jhupal camp.

Day 5Trek from Dunai to Hankhe

After having our early morning breakfast, we leave towards Hankhe. The walk would take approximately 4 and a half hours. Traversing through a suspension bridge we turn to the west following a trail past a hospital. Further, the trail ascends up the side of the unwooded, Thulo Bheri valley before going in Phoksundo river valley. On the way, we will be rewarded with the view of Kagmara Peak up the valley. Then, passing through walnut groves, Dhera, and Rahagaun villages, we mark our way down dense jungles and finally reach Hankhe.

Day 6Trek from Hankhe to Reiji

Leaving behind Hankhe we move towards Reiji. Today, the trail goes up and down through the pathway. Descending along the wooded river bank we go through the lofty trail on the way to Reiji. The pathway leads through several streams along the way that offer a chance to cool off. Leaving the forests and the trail we pass through a grassy slope high above the river. Further, we go downhill through the dense forest followed by a rickety staircase leading to the river bank. Finally, we reach Reiji where we stay overnight.

Day 7Trek from Reiji to Phoksundo Lake

After having our early morning breakfast, we head towards Phoksundo Lake. The walk would take approximately 5 hours. Wildering through the pine forests the trail goes along a river. There may be some ups and downs may be encountered in between. The trek goes through a cedar forest before reaching Palam village. Trekking up to a ridge we enjoy distant views of Phoksundo Lake along with a spectacular waterfall, one of the highest in Nepal. Finally, the trail through the birch forest and we reach Phoksundo lake.

Day 8Acclimatization at Phoksundo Lake

Today we spent our day exploring the Phoksunda Lake. We hike to the village of Ringmo and it’s Tibetan Buddhist Monastery. Also, we will get a chance to explore the culture of the local residents. Donned in cultural attire both men and women wear homespun clothing, dyed in maroon color. Not to mention, their cultural attire references Tibetan-style somba or dhocha (boots with upturned toes) for footwear.

Day 9Trek from Phoksundo Lake to Lake Beach

After having our early morning breakfast, we leave behind Phoksundo lake and head towards Lake Beach. It would take approximately 5 hours to reach Lake Beach. The trail leads through the remote areas, on the unsteady trail suspended on a gangway of wood supported on pegs driven into abysses in the rocks. Further, the path takes us through a lush meadow that opens up into the flood plain of the Phoksundo Khola. Then we finally reach Lake Beach along the trail.

Day 10Trek from Lake Beach to Mandala camp

Today we head towards Manadala camp from Lake Beach. The walk would take about 5 hours. The trail moves along the Phoksundo Khola and another mountain stream, there is an old wooden bridge. Further, we ascend a sheep meadow through a lofty trail. Reaching the top we can sight the Kang-La pass. Finally, we reach the Mandala Camp and stay there overnight.

Day 11Trek from Mandala camp to Kangla to Shey Gompa

Today the climb would be quite strenuous. From the top of Kang-la pass, we get stunning views of the large valley parted by a gushing river. Then, we descend through a steep trail, meandering along the banks of a river. Traversing through the river we move pat the Yak Kharka, the grazing area. Consequently, crossing a log bridge we reach Shey Gompa.

Day 12Trek from Shey Gompa to Gela pass to Namgung

Today the trek will take about 5-6 hours. The trail passes through beautiful juniper forests moving down to a rocky canyon. After having our early morning breakfast we initiate our trek from Shey Gompa to Gela pass then heading to Namgung. While traversing through Gela pass, we witness the stunning views of the northern part of Tibetan plateau, which is the highest plateau in the world.

Day 13Trek from Namgung to Yanger Gompa

After having our early morning breakfast, we leave Namgung and head towards Yanger Gompa. The trek would to the gompa takes about 5 hours. Wildering through the remote areas of Yanger Gompa, we follow the old trade route to Tibet. The trail lets you explore some of the most culturally interesting regions of the trek. Not to mention, the sceneries will leave you awestruck. Traversing through the Gela pass we get to see the majestic views of Mustang, Tibet, Kagmara and Riu Dhukta, or the Crystal Mountain. We follow the Namga Khola past more summer herding spots, to the large village of Saldang. Then, heading north along the Nagon Khola, we finally reach Yanger Gompa, where we set up camp for the night.

Day 14Trek from Yanger Gompa to Musi Gaon

Today we start our trek to Musi Gaon from Yanger Gompa. We reach there after approximately 6 hours of walk. It is an easy trek descending through the trail to Musi Khola. Moreover, the Musi Gaon is the nearest village to the Tibet border and we can have a little Hike around 1 hour around Tibet and Nepal Border. Not to mention the trail offers scenic views of nature.

Day 15Trek from Musi Gaon to Lnag La to Sime Gaon

After having our breakfast we head towards Sime Gaon via Lnag La pass. The trek would take about 6 hours. Leaving behind the beautiful Musi Gaon following Lnag La pass (5002 m). Finally, we reach Sime Gaon, a large village where we will camp at the Local Primary School and can have new experience after involving with the people culture.

Day 16Trek from Sime Gaon to Tinja

Today we head towards Tinja after having our early morning breakfast. The walk would take about 6 hours. The trail to Tinje is a flat surface descending through the Pinyan Khola. Further, it leads to small greenery offering scenic views of nature. Finally, we reach Tinja and stay overnight.

Day 17 Trek from Tinja to Kheng

After having early morning breakfast, we leave Tinja and head towards Kheng. We reach Kheng approximately in 6 hours. Wildering through the trail we will get to see stunning views of nature. Finally, we reach Kheng and camp here overnight.

Day 18Trek from Kheng to Charkha

Today the trail leads us to Charkha pass from Kheng Khola (5036 m). It would take about 7 hours to reach there. After reaching Charkha Bhote, we stay there overnight. It is a large village and the unique culture of the locals along with the hospitality will amaze you.

Day 19Trek from Charkha to Yak Kharka

After having our early morning breakfast, we start our walk from Charkha to Yak Kharka (4780 m), that is 7 hours of approximate walking. Moreover, Yak Kharkha is a large green field where people with their Yak who came for business they used to stay there so it is called Yak Kharka.

Day 20Trek from Yak Kharka to Sangda Pass to Sangda Phedi

Today we head towards Sangda Phedi through Sangda Pass (4295 m). The trek would take approximately 6 and a half hours. The trail goes through Sangda Pass and moving to Sangda Phedi. On our way, we get the stunning views of mountain peaks such as Mt Tashikang (6,383m), Tongu peak (6,197m), Hongdae peak (6,556m) and many more.

Day 21Trek from Sangda Phedi to Sangda

After having our early morning breakfast we head towards Sangda (3909 m). The walk would take about 5 hours. The village comprises vegetation similar to Tibetan culture. We stay here overnight.

Day 22Trek from Sangda to Phale Gaon

Today we leave Sangda village and head towards Phale Gaon. After approximately 6 hours of walk, we reach Phale Gaon (2900 m). Wildering through the village, we get glances of enchanting scenic beauty and diverse geography.

Day 23Trek from Phale Gaon to Jomsom

After having our early morning breakfast, we leave towards Jomsom. Not to mention, the diverse landscapes and cultures to be found along the trekking routes give marvelous insights. Overnight at Jomsom.

Day 24Flight from Jomsom to Pokhara

After having our breakfast, we take a flight to Kathmandu via Pokhara. The flight in itself would create some unforgettable experiences for you. The jaw-dropping views of Annapurna ranges and Mt Dhaulagiri makes it even worthy.

Day 25 Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu
